Revise and Outline

Today I slept in and missed some solid early morning writing hours. Instead, I had bizarre dreams about giant bug-like things with fur invading my house. Gross.

When I did get up, however, I felt pretty productive. I reread and revised my first three chapters, and then started outlining some of the upcoming chapters. I was kind of stuck, so I took a shower, which, for whatever reason seems to unleash my creativity (I’ve been writing this book in my head for years, primarily in the shower or during church services – I apologize to the pastors in my family.) I came up with some great ideas, including an AWESOME PLOT TWIST (you won’t see it coming.) I even drew some maps. I felt like I could go on and on, but my children were really pestering my wife, who also had work to do.

So, I stopped my work and took the girls down to the designated play area in the basement. I put in a lot of time making pretend food, and then some more time being the patient for the two doctors. After that, we did some serious work with Lego blocks. Important work, especially considering that one of my goals during this MFA is to remain present in the moment with my children. Still, after a while, there’s only so many checkups a guy can receive (and by the way, I always need a shot, which is bogus.) The upside is the my wife was able to get some work done. We’re a team.

I do so enjoy writing days, though. I wish every day could be a writing day. Someday, Bromleigh and I are going to be wildly successful authors, and then writing can be our only job. That would be awesome. We could also open our bookstore, which would be equally awesome. I think I’m going to have to come out of the gates with a Newbery Honor book, at the very least, to get the ball rolling on that.

Of course, it has to get written first.

I finally succumbed to the Buzzfeed Quiz: What Career Should You Actually Have? I got Writer. So there you have it: Incontrovertible scientific proof that I am heading in the right direction. I’m sure it’s a completely valid and reliable test.

Now, let’s see if I can sneak in a little bit more work before dinner. Weekends are the best.

  1. You’ve been awesome productive. I’m a leeetle jealous. Not that I’m behind or anything. Probably I should try and finish my 40 pages today, even though weekends are crappy writing days for me. I guess we’ll see how it goes
